Venue of our wedding dinner

Gotten some pictures of how the ballroom looks like fully decked out in wedding galore, along with the bridal suite. Not too sure if this would be how everything looks like on our actual day, but even looking at it, I really cannot wait!

How our ballroom looks - Not exactly the same colour. Cause I chose a different colour for the table cloth

Our New Home

It has been a really crazy week since I came back. I think I have really gotten a lot of things done in 1 week. Work is never-ending as usual. I have gotten a new apartment in the same block at Wanke, only this time round a bigger one with 2 rooms. I figured that with Sheryl moving in on May, the stuff that we have would probably overload that one room apartment that I have been staying for the past year. Due to work, it took me about 4 days to completely shift out of the old place to the new one, although its in the same block.

It took me a few more days to settle all the stuff in the house, although there are still bags of stuff lying around, but I think they look pretty decent now, and most importantly clean. (I will probably put up some pictures later on.) My hi-fi area is setup (what’s new), my bed is done, and wardrobe with space for dear when she is here and also bought a new study table and chair for the study room. I am so happy to be in the new place and really look forward to welcoming the female owner in May. A very good thing about this place is that it have got a kitchen, a decent one not a cooking area or passage, a larger balcony (we can make a nice small garden), a larger living room (for my toys), and imported household appliances such as a Samsung TV, Electrolux refrigerator, and a Siemens Washing machine with dryer.

Just went window shopping last night after dinner, looking at the kitchen appliances, I thought maybe I should get some cooking equipments for my dear since she have always to show me that she can cook. If you have all the good equipments, than what reason can you think off if the chicken macaroni is still blend….hahahahahaaa… I think I am going to serious get a beat up when she is here.

Alright I am bad, I will continue to shop around during my free time to see what I can do or improve on the house before you are finally here.

The home is not complete without the lady mistress of the house, filled with stuff yet empty at the same time. I am missing you, dear.

My Pillar of Support

For everything I am said to be, I am so glad that I have Sheryl by side all these while.

You were the support that I lack through the 23 years of my life prior to knowing you. You loosen me up, showing me that it is alright to behave like a child sometimes. I am really comfortable with you and definitely did a lot of stupid things with you too, like riding to and fro Tampines and Teck Whye in the middle of the night, the bak chok mee, jian dao jian and dim sum at 2am.

I still remember how much I wanted to mess around with hi-fi stuff, without you I would probably not touch these things as they were pretty costly for me at that time. I could still visualize the first time we went Adelphi, looking at these equipments with me and my arm in cast. I even have problem putting on the headphones! That was my very first equipment and then after all hell break loose, buying and selling 2nd hand hi-fi equipments almost every fortnight, trying out more than 20 pieces of equipment with that period of 3 months. DIYing my amplifiers soon became a fascination and the rest follow. Throughout these times, Sheryl, who was not really interested in these equipments was with me all the while, I remember she was so bored that she fell asleep during some sessions in the hi-fi shops. Those nights where I just sat at my desk with the soldering iron, tearing off bits and pieces of components from the PCB board, and my dear doing her stuff till she fell asleep made me feel so guilty. Quoting Ashley’s Tan, “This is the toy that I want for my birthday and Christmas this year next year and the rest of my life,” this was a toy, hobby, and fascination whatsoever (hi-fi), I wanted for a very long time, and you made it a reality for me. It may mean nothing to many (even my mum missed this), but it mean a lot to me, a lot! You enforce my belief that there is nothing I cannot achieve if I wanted to, at a time where I am lacking in a lot of self confidence and esteem.

Family was a mess and that’s a fact, I am sorry that you have endured the many nonsense when you were with me. I really want to say THANK YOU; thank you for never giving up on me, thank you for believing me, and thank you for entrusting the remaining years of your life with me.

Together forever and ever ok!

It's been a year...

It has been one year.. Since what you ask? Since Marcus propose that's what! :D

And next month's 18th will mark Marcus' one year in China.. But I can't say that it means one year apart from each other. Cause truth be told, we have been able to see each other quite frequently.

Now, let me try to recount how this one year of being soon-to-be-Mrs-Lim went, and how the next few months will be like:

February 2008
- Spent getting ready for Marcus' flight to Guangzhou, spent some very very good times, albeit a little tiring. Took quite a few days leave (half-days actually), cause really really wanted to spend time with him before he flew. Was a very difficult time, cause really cannot bear to be apart from him.

March 2008

- Marcus was sick a few days before he was due to fly. He had very bad pain in the stomach, and spent one day majorly puking and having severe diarrhoea. Went to the family doctor twice, diagnosed with gastric and stomach infection. Ended up, since we wanted him to be in best form when he leaves for Guangzhou, we admitted him into Gleneagles Hospital where he spent a weekend recuperating on the drip.

- My family also threw a farewell and we-love-you popiah party at Kuku Teresa's house. Good food, good company and heartfelt wishes. Marcus was left to eat porridge (good porridge hor.. ABALONE porridge wor!) while I had some otah and fried chicken wing. Dear family, thank you each and every single one of you very much for taking the effort to prepare, cook food and come to attend this piggy's party. I felt very happy looking at all of you treating him as one of us, and I know all of you are equally happy that I have finally found some one 'silly' enough to want to marry me. (Yeay, Sheryl is finally getting married off. Heng ah.. If not she will stay single all her life :D)

- The night before Marcus was flying, we spent time talking about our relationship, and re-assuring each other that no matter what, we have faith and trust in each other and in our relationship. I cried so much, that I thought maybe I will not tear in the airport when I say goodbye. But NO. Waterbaby Sheryl Tan cried like nobody's business when hugging him for the last time before he stepped into the departure gates. And even in the cab to work, the tears just refused to stop rolling down my cheeks.

April 2008
- It was a difficult period, trying to get used to a life all on my own, going to work, having lunch and dinner, knocking off, watching TV, falling asleep and waking up, everything on my own. I tried to cope, printed out photos of us, and pasting them on the wall beside the bed, putting on his singlet on my pillow to hug to sleep etc. Very very difficult. BUT, there was a silver lining.

May 2009
- 30 April - 04 May 2008. I departed Singapore to Guangzhou to visit Marcus. It was weird seeing him initially at the airport. But the minute he hugged me, it felt like home. I spent 5 very very happy days there, cramming in all the happiness to make up for the time we spent apart. Seeing the places he eats at, staying in the apartment he calls home, all these made me feel closer to him. when the day came for me to return to Singapore, it was the first of many many more byebyes at airport departure gates. From the very very first time when he left Singapore for the 3-days exploratory trip, until his last return to Singapore for CNY, I cry like a baby on the day/night leading up to the goodbye, and even at the airport departure gate.

June 2008
- Marcus came back for a few days to settle his Visa. YIPPIE!! This was unexpected trip number 1. Originally, we were only supposed to be able to see each other in July when he comes back for graduation!

July 2008
- Marcus came back for his commencement ceremony!! The day that he had worked hard for and been waiting for since he was 16 had finally arrived. He graduated from University with a double major. So what if he did not stand out amongst his peers. It is not so much your grades that matter, but what you do with it. You took your degree and went overseas. Proving our poly lecturer wrong. Cause who says Marcus Lim will never be an expat? He is an expat, and a jolly good one at that!

August 2008
- Hohoho!! He came back again to get his work visa - unexpected trip number 2!! This time round, we managed to celebrate his birthday in advance. This was also the trip that we started to talk about holding our wedding. We visited the bridal studio which I had shortlisted, and tried to negotiate to see if we could get everything we wanted in the budget we had. We also visited one of the banquet dinner which I had shortlisted, but sad to say, RSYC failed to hit the expectation we had.

September 2008
- Cannot remember any major happenings, except that I celebrated my dad's birthday. And that I was counting down to October, as Marcus was coming back for a week.

October 2008
- Marcus kept his promise, and came back to spend my birthday with me. It was golden week National Day holiday in China, so he managed to stay for about a week. We went to view the hotel which I had confirmed (Novotel Clarke Quay) for our wedding, looked at the ballroom, had high tea there, went to sign the contract with the bridal studio, decided on our wedding ring and placed an order etc.. We brought Nicnic to the zoo, and oh yeah, his mother also came over to discuss with Dad and Mum on the dowry. All in all, we accomplished a lot this month.

November 2008
- I went for my wisdom tooth surgery, and Marcus was due to travel to Europe for work. And I was touched beyond words when he told me he was flying back on the day of my operation, and would rush to the hospital to see me. Now, the SQ flight from Guangzhou arrives in Singapore at about 5.30pm, and his flight to Frankfurt was at midnight the same day. Imagine rushing down to Alexandra Hospital at evening peak hours with a luggage in tow! But that's what he did. And after his Europe trip, we managed to spend a weekend together before he flew back to Guangzhou.

December 2008
- I spent 2 very very happy weeks in Guangzhou. Spent both Christmas, and ushering in 2009 in cold Guangzhou with Marcus. We took the opportunity and took our pre-wedding photos over Christmas Day and Boxing Day. A lot of fun and definitely great memories. Went for a spa on the first day of new year. That was also a memory to cherish. We went to IKEA, had our first steamboat at home, spent lots of time together. Looking forward and planning our 2009 and our dreams and hopes for the year.

January 2009
- Marcus came back for Lunar New Year. This was our last year of collecting angpows. But we did not purposely made an effort to visit like mad. I guess, we are not so .... kiasu. :D We also did our food tasting, choosing of the hotel colour themes, wedding favours, selection of wedding gowns, selection of wedding cards and deciding on the contents of the inserts etc. We also went through our photographs to decide on which photos to go into the photo montage. Marcus also brought back the flash DVD of the wedding pictures.. SO nice!!

February 2009
- We have both been busy preparing for the wedding and our new life together. I tendered my resignation and started serving my two-months notice. He shifted all our stuff to a new 2-bedroom apartment, and has started to try to get the place comfortable and ready for me to go over. I am now doing the photo montage and the addressing of the wedding invitations etc. Marcus has also finalised the layout of our album, and selected the albums etc.

March 2009
- Marcus to be very busy with work, and the collection of our wedding albums and frames and the other small freebies from the bridal studio in Guangzhou. I will be going with Dad and Mum to deliver the cards to our relatives. I am also hosting all our helpers for dinner on 31 March to run through their roles and responsibilities on our big day. And I have to continue my driving lesson, and practise hard to pass my TP on my second attempt. I HATE failing such stuff..

April 2009
- My last day of work will be 8 April 2009, and I am flying off to Guangzhou with the first batch of my stuff on 9 April 2009. I will be spending 11 days in Guangzhou, buying the tea set for his mother, getting some miscellaneous stuff for the wedding, sourcing for kua shoes, accessories for my wedding gown etc. And also settling some of the required documents which I need for my Visa application. And in the meantime, wedding preparation goes on as usual, choosing of wedding songs, confirmation of photo montage etc.

- We will be back to Singapore on 20 April, and will be spending the final 2 weeks before the wedding doing last minute preparations, last minute driving lessons until my TP on 27 April, collection of wedding gowns, RSVP etc.

Yippie! Ahead of schedule for something!

Our invitation cards, design of inserts and colour of envelopes were all decided when Marcus was still in Singapore for the Lunar New Year.

We were under the impression that collection will be in 10 working days, and so I estimated that the cards will only be ready towards the end of February as I had only approved the final artwork of the inserts on 10 Feb. This was a ittle worrying, as his colleagues were asking about the invitation cards, and we didn't know if I would not have enough time to address the cards and send it to China.

But guess what, I was told by the shop that I could collect the cards on 18 February 2009 a day after I had approved the artwork! Wow.. and wonders never cease.. Last Thursday, I received a call saying the cards are done and ready for collection!

With the cards now safely in Tampines, I am left with printing the maps and cutting them, folding the inserts and the card and addressing them and labelling the envelopes accordingly.

The cards for our overseas guests are more or less done except for the maps, and DHL will collect them from my office tomorrow!! :D

- Update as of 18 February.. The parcel was delivered yesterday! Thats fast! Thank you DHL! Marcus has given out the cards to Daniel and also a few of his bosses. Let's hope all of them turns up for our big day!

From dating to preparing for marriage

After knowing each other for so many years, and being together for a couple of years, we both knew that we wanted to settle down together, and live happily ever after. The question was just.. when? (Although I must confess, I will always remember a comment he made, something along the line of within 5 years :D)

In Singapore, everything is about money. At that time, Marcus was still doing his degree course, and I was earning, literally, peanuts. There would be no way we could get married, and not find ourself, knee-deep in debt. The catalyst that enabled us to start planning for a future? Marcus graduated and got a job earning a respectable pay working in China.

In the course of deciding whether to take up the job, the discussion turned to that of marriage. Of how the pay offered will allow us to get married without being in debt, and how with the marriage, he will be able to offer me an official (yes, we are traditional-minded) status and put my parents' minds at ease when I join him in China after my graduation.

No concrete plans about the wedding was made. Our original idea was to get ROM before I leave for China in May 2009. We shopped for a proposal ring, and I was almost worried that I could not find the perfect setting I wanted. Yes, diamonds was not my cause of worry, as they are definitely a-plenty. It was the setting of the band that I was worried about. But of cause, we found the perfect ring for me!

The proposal was done in the place where we are most comfortable - At Home. There were no surprises, no nicely decorated place, no delicious romantic dinner. But it was the best proposal anyone could have. There was a bouquet of roses (white, I remember), and Marcus kneeling down on one knee. Yes, he stammered and stuttered, but hey, which man wouldn't? It needed much courage to ask a lady to entrust the rest of her life in your hands! He spoke of love and trust, and also of responsibility. And for someone who seldom makes any promises, he made me a solemn promise (which I am keeping a secret).

Keeping a long-distance relationship strong and steady was tough. But we persevered on as we have a common goal - to live the rest of our lives as one. After numerous discussions, we decided that it would be too troublesome to hold a ROM ceremony, and return to Singapore again in future to hold the customary wedding. I was tasked to research and budget to see if we could afford to hold the customary wedding and solemnisation on the same day.

It was fun to source for the different vendors and hotels, and to decide on the sort of wedding I would like. I am really fortunate in this sense that Marcus gave me free reign and full control over what sort of wedding to have. From the date of the wedding - to the choosing of the venue - to the bridal studio - to the theme of the wedding. I was allowed to make decisions on all these and even more, without having to bend over backwards trying to accomodate Marcus, my parents or my mother-in-law. That being said, of cause I showed respect to Marcus, by informing him of the reasons for my decisions, and waiting for his confirmation that said I am right. :D

I decided on a May wedding (more details in about us), made an appointment to view my desired hotel (and confirmed it within a week) and with all these major decisions made, we set up a date for our parents to meet to discuss the dowry. We were really glad that my parents and his mother were very understanding and accommodating to us and our small budget, and that they are also happy that we are tying the knot.

With all these settled, our wedding was made a reality, and we are soon going to be embarking on the next chapter of our lives together. But first, we have to go through the anxiety and stress of wedding preparation. Stay tuned to see how we coped and what was done in later entries!

Love from Sheryl

Why 1 May was chosen as the wedding date

Marcus left the decision of the wedding date to me. As we both do not believe in Fengshui, we did not have to approach any masters to ask for auspicious dates, and neither do we have to ask our parents for approval. :D

Firstly, I wanted a May wedding. Why MAY? Cause:

  • January is usually CNY
  • February has Valentines Day (presents + celebration)
  • March and April do not sound nice (though I hope to have kids born in these two months)
  • May is PERFECT
  • June is school holiday period = expensive airtickets & hotels if we plan to travel during our anniversary
  • July is the month of our dating anniversary (presents + celebration)
  • August is Marcus' birthday month (presents + celebration)
  • September is when our pockets are still recovering from the two months in a row celebration
  • October is my birthday month (presents + celebration)
  • November is BORING + normally rainy
  • December is Christmas (presents + celebration)

See, I don't want our wedding to fall in months whereby we are already celebrating significant events. Neither do I want all the significant events to fall too closely to each other. So a May wedding is perfect!

Next, the date!!

Actually, I thought of having it on 30 May, as that is after my exams, and primary/secondary school exams too. But, it is also during the school holidays (see comments on why I do not want a June wedding), and what is so nice about 30 MAY?!?!

Now, 1 May is DIFFERENT. In both Singapore and China, 1 May is labour day aka PUBLIC HOLIDAY. Therefore:

  • We do not have to waste our annual leave in applying for leave on our anniversary
  • Marcus has no excuse that he needs to go back to office in China on our anniversary
  • What is not to love about having anniversary on a public holiday!? It is like.. the government is paying you to celebrate your anniversary and letting you have a day off on that day! woohoo!

And that was what made me decide on 1 May 2009 :D

Finally we are UP!!

Marcus and I have finally agreed and decided to go ahead to have two sites to record our wedding preparation, marriage life, and happily-ever-after.

Instead of posting on our individual blogs (which by the way, has now been defunct), we have decided to have both marcus-sheryl.weddingannouncer.com and marcus-sheryl.blogspot.com.

Reason behind having two sites?
  1. Not sure if weddingannouncer.com can be seen and viewed in China
  2. Not sure if weddingannouncer.com has an expiry date
  3. It will be weird if we manage to keep these sites going, and we end up posting about having kids a few years down the road on weddingannouncer right?

So yes, we are finally up on the www to showcase our journey (80 more days!!) and share our joys and tears with friends and family.
