Hong Kong again (19-20 Jun 09)

Headed to Hong Kong for the weekend as Marcus had to open a HKD bank account. So silly right? The majority of his pay is paid through Singapore bank account, his China portion of the pay is through a China bank account, and his traveling expenses that the company is supposed to reimburse to him, is in HKD through a Hong Kong bank account!

Our Home in Foshan

We are now currently living in a two bedroom apartment (aka Singapore 3-room flat style).

We had chosen to rent an apartment by the developer Vanke (万科). This is a very popular developer in China, and usually expatriates who come over to China, will choose to set up home in these estates. Reason being that the standard of work on the overall construction of the buildings, the amenities, security and service standard are all relatively higher than those of other real estate developers here.

That being said, of cause the cost of purchasing an apartment in Vanke is also higher than those of other developers. We are currently paying slightly more than 2,000RMB in rental every month (not including utilities), and that's considered high-cost living for the locals here. Many of them are staying in homes which cost them 300-500RMB a month in rent. Previously, we had rented a one-bedroom apartment (about 55sqm, and had found it a tad too small for the two of us as there was insufficient storage space. Imagine, some of the similar sized apartments here are sectioned to create additional rooms, and there could be between 4-8 people sharing the small 55sqm house!

Hong Kong (28-31 May 2009) - Day 3

Day three was our visit to the highest point of Hong Kong—Victoria Peak!

But in order to start our day right, we had to eat well! So we went back to our favourite eatery.. Look at our egg tarts! Yummy!!

And then, we headed to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, where we took the train, and changed at Central.

Photobucket
From there, we switched to the other line, and took the MTR to Shang Wan

We did a round-about, as we went to some Hi-Fi shops to check out Marcus' amplifier stuff. And then, we started the long long LONG walk to the tram station!

Photobucket
Bored and tired of walking.. We walked so much whenever we are in Hong Kong!

Photobucket
Finally arrived at the Tram Station!

Waiting in line

Photobucket
Yes, definitely bored and HOT!

The Victoria Peak commenced commercial business on 30 May 1888. Therefore, the day we went, was actually the 121th anniversary!!!

In the past, the people (usually super rich) who live on the Peak had to travel up in sedan chairs. In 1881, Scotsman Alexander Findlay Smith decided to come up with a faster and better way up the Peak. Upon completion in 1888, this was the first cable funicular in Asia, with a total length of 1,365 metres and connecting five intermediate stations.

After numerous changes to the different types of tram cars used and driving system, it is now currently using microprocessor-controlled electric drive system. One thing left unchanged, is that the tram is still running on the original 121 years old tracks! The tram moves at a maximum speed of 6 metres per second, and there are two 44mm in diameter haulage ropes used, and these can hold up to 139 tonnes.

The Tram track.

Photobucket
In this picture, we were still happy. But the slightly balding ang mo behind us? He barged into Marcus while getting up the tram, and the two of them got into a slight tussle! We thought only chinese are KS and rush up the tram pushing everyone out of their way. Looks like even these angmo, who think they are a step higher than the China locals, are the same, if not worse!

Photobucket
Although Marcus won the fight (from the tangled up mess on the steps of the Peak, he got up first! haha), look at his unhappy face! He was soooo prepared to just punch that angmo!

Arrived at the Peak, and took a picture with the Tram beside us.

Our purpose of going up the Peak, other than to have a bird's eye view of Hong Kong, was to go to Madame Tussauds. Here, you see very real-looking wax figurines of your favourite celebrities, royalty, sportsmen/women and even world leaders!
