It was a long weekend here in China as it was 端午节 and we took advantage of it to make a quick getaway to nearby Hong Kong for the weekend. Travelling to Hong Kong from our home required us to take a private car to 广州东站 where we took the train which would bring us direct to Hung Hom (红勘) MTR station in Hong Kong.

Well, the train journey would have been an absolutely PERFECT ride if not for this German lady sitting next to us, chatting with an American whom she met on the train. Being newly-weds, we took this short getaway as a mini-honeymoon, and it definitely was not a great start to the day as they were talking about divorce and how marriage is delusional. :( oh well, just our luck. If we did not speak English, we would not understand a word they say.. So let’s just say that shit happens. :D Let’s not let them spoil our great weekend!

Our train tickets. The MTT is our favourite train, though it costs slightly more expensive, but the seats are more comfortable. Also, the better class cabin (HK230) which we took on our way home tends to be less crowded, and a tad quieter.

Our hotel was situated right smack in Tsim Sha Tsui, just off Nathan Road (which by the way, links at least three MTR stations! It is a VERY long road). That made shopping along the local brand boutiques in Tsim Sha Tsui very convenient! We were about 5minutes walk to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, and one of the first things we did was to get ourselves a Octopus card (HK’s version of EZ-link card).
We travelled by MTR most of the times as taxis in HK are relatively more expensive than in China. Besides, the MTR was really a very convenient mode of transport in HK.

Armed with our travel guides and the map of Hong Kong we got from our hotel front desk, we explored Nathan Road, sat down for some HK mango dessert where we REALLY concentrated on deciphering the maps and deciding where to go.

Sheryl concentrating on the map
Oh yeah, and Sheryl did the classic bimbotic move of turning the map upside down in order to match the map to where we were standing. Oh well. That’s what not going to the army does to you! We went to Ladies Street where we bought shorts for sleeping before proceeding back to the hotel to drop off our stuff, and then, Marcus brought us to this quaint little Macau eatery that became our favourite place to eat in HK!

Oysters noodle.. Look at the amount of oysters in this dish!

Crispy Macau Pork Bun

Our favourite egg tarts! We always end up buying a box of this to eat on the train back whenever we travel to Hong Kong!
After dinner, we absolutely had to take a walk, as we were so bloated from our dinner. Therefore, we took a leisurely stroll down to the Avenue of Stars! It was a super windy night, perfect for newly-weds to walk hand in hand down the street together! Beautifully lit up high-rise buildings on both sides of the river, we saw many photo enthusiasts with their cameras trying to take a perfect shot of the night scene.
